Welcoming Our 2026 Duke Summer Interns

We’re excited to continue our long-standing connection with Duke University by welcoming two outstanding summer interns: Olivia Ess and Sophia Zheng. They both are talented and eager to make an impact during their time with Raising a Reader MA until mid-July.

Learn more about them by reading their bios:

Olivia Ess

My name is Olivia Ess, and I’m an incoming junior at Duke University. I’m majoring in both English and Public Policy. My favorite childhood book is Sisters by Raina Telgemeier. I’m excited to learn more about the behind-the-scenes coordination and leadership required to successfully operate a nonprofit and support meaningful community engagement. One fun fact is that ’m currently training for my first half-marathon, which I’ll be running in Scotland this fall!

Sophia Zheng

My name is Sophia Zheng, and I’m an incoming sophomore at Duke University. I intend to study Economics and Political Science with a concentration in Decision Science and Data Analysis. My favorite childhood book is A Series of Unfortunate Events. I’m looking forward to working with the team and build skills in grant research and marketing efforts. One fun fact is that I grew up working at my parent’s Chinese restaurant.
