RED BAG FACT: The number of words a child knows entering Kindergarten is a predictor of later success.

VIDEO: You have the power to build your child's strong brain by talking with him/her. Check it out!

RED BAG FACT: When we ask children questions at storytime, we give them a chance to talk about the story and practice using their words.

VIDEO: Use open ended questions that can't be answered with yes or no to encourage your child's vocabulary use. Check it out!

RED BAG TIP: Great open-ended questions start with 'WH-'. Ask what something is, where something is, who someone is, or why something is.

VIDEO: "Why?" questions are a great way to learn what your child is thinking. See them in action here.

RED BAG FACT: Questions help start conversations with your child and increase vocabulary. Families exchange 2500 words/hour when reading.

RED BAG TIP: When your child names an object or character, extend the conversation. Ask follow up questions about size, color, or feelings.

RED BAG FACT: Ask your child what s/he remembers or thinks will happen. You'll see what s/he understands, and it's a good way to practice vocabulary!

RED BAG TIP: If your child has made a story prediction about the cover, check back part way through the story and ask "Did our prediction come true?"

RED BAG FACT: Kids are experts in their own lives and are proud to connect books to their experiences. This helps create a love of reading.

VIDEO: Connecting the book to your child's life is as easy as inserting his/her name! Try this.

RED BAG TIP: Ask, “Which of these foods do you like to eat?” or “If you were ____ what would you do?” or “This is like the time we went to...” to help your child relate to the story.

VIDEO: Children love to talk about what they like and don't like. Use this strategy to connect to the book.

RED BAG TIP: Next time you read a red bag book, choose a word from the story and come up with rhyming words together.

RED BAG TIP: Have your child fill in the blank about a picture. Point to a character and say, “The man is wearing a _____!”
