Volunteer Spotlight: Elizabeth Perry

We’re grateful to have wonderful volunteers who offer their skills and experience to provide much-needed help with projects. One of those amazing volunteers is Elizabeth Perry. Elizabeth began working with us earlier this year, and she’s quickly proven herself as someone who truly cares about our mission and wants to make an impact.

We took some time to sit down with Elizabeth to learn more about her and her volunteer work with us.

First Impressions – How did you first come to learn about Raising a Reader MA and what drew you to volunteer for the organization?

I took a Children’s Literature course during college, and this study motivated me to pursue a connection with my prior experience and interest in nonprofit work. Then, I began researching organizations with impact areas focused on literacy and literature initiatives for young readers.  Raising a Reader MA piqued my interest because of its emphasis on fostering readership at home.  I reached out with a volunteer inquiry via the website contact form. I am grateful for the team’s willingness to support me as a new volunteer!

Connection to Mission – How has volunteering deepened your understanding of the importance of literacy?

I support various projects for the programs and development teams allowing them to continue supporting literacy efforts across Massachusetts. My task-oriented work helps support direct work for community members. One project I have worked on includes researching partner organizations and identifying programs for families and youth ages 0-6. This work enables the team to continue seeking out ways to continue literacy efforts through collaborative ties. My support challenges me to understand the importance of the behind-the-scenes work necessary to carry out the work led by Community Ambassadors.

Collaboration & Teamwork – How has working alongside RAR-MA staff influenced your experience?

As a remote volunteer for RAR-MA I continue to develop my asynchronous communication skills. I meet with Lindsay Woods, the Executive Administrator and Data Analytics Manager, on a weekly basis for a thirty-minute check-in where we discuss current and upcoming projects. Additionally she acts as the point of contact for upcoming projects and needs of other RAR-MA staff. This experience has shown me how the team functions and operates, maintaining collaboration and openness.

Impact on the Team – In what ways do you feel your efforts have contributed to advancing our Team?

My effort helps alleviate the tasks for comprehensive projects and goals. Some examples include contacting the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to verify demographic data for a core community, creating tables based on data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, creating grant application templates, and organizing photos enhancing the organization’s digital archive. My volunteer work furthers efforts towards securing funds, enhancing partner relations, and utilizing key data to support the organization’s mission.

Personal Growth – What skills or knowledge have you developed or strengthened through your volunteer work?

The volunteer work allows me to develop a variety of skills to support the unique needs of Raising a Reader-MA. As I conduct research on partner organizations, reach out to school districts, and learn about prospective grants I learn more about how skills such as data analysis, online interpersonal communication, and adaptability support the team’s specific needs. Currently I am learning more about Salesforce and how this customer relationship management (CRM) software provides connectivity to the multiple moving parts of this work. I value skill development and knowledge because it allows me to think critically, offer improved support, and strengthen relationships.

Memorable Moments – Can you share a specific interaction or moment that has stayed with you since volunteering?

I remember sharing my intentions for volunteering on an introductory call with Angela Haynes, Director of Development, and Lindsay. The positive, supportive interaction encouraged me to share my hope for learning new skills and gaining more exposure to nonprofit work. As an early-career professional it is meaningful to engage with individuals willing to offer a learning opportunity and connection.

We’re grateful to have volunteers like Elizabeth on our team. If you’d like to volunteer with Raising a Reader MA, please email us at info@raisingareaderma.org.
