While working with Raising a Reader MA, I had the pleasure of interviewing caregivers and their families about their experiences with the Red Book Bag Program. The first parent I met with was Luana Oliveira, the mother of our student, Noah.
This interview was especially memorable for me because Luana’s first language is Portuguese, while mine is Spanish. Thus, our conversation was a blend of languages, highlighting from the start the multicultural nature of RAR-MA’s programming. From conversing about their favorite books to how the Red Book Bag Program has become a safe way for them to cultivate their familial relationship, the interview showcased how learning is a universal experience that can be shared with everyone.
I am very excited to have put together a short video of Luana and Noah’s story. They are a wonderful family who has embraced the beauty of learning how to read together – sharing with us the love and vulnerability that can grow out of these moments. Even though at first I had been nervous about our language barrier, this experience inspired a learning opportunity. Not only did I get to transcribe a video in multiple languages for the first time, but also put into practice how much we can understand each other as individuals when we give each other the space to speak with an open heart. With the support of my supervisors, I was able to fulfill my passion for documenting stories to illustrate those special, organic impact moments that make the work of RAR-MA speak for itself – to open doors by opening books.
Wrapping up, I want to thank Luana especially for giving me the opportunity to interview her and her family. It was through this experience that I got to see firsthand the work of the program, filling me with pride to contribute to a mission that values family, literacy, and connection. – Michelle
