National Family Literacy Month Day #2: Fantasy

Today we challenge you and your child to explore the world of fantasy in books of fairy tales, fables and superheroes!

To participate in our Family Literacy Month Challenge, post a photo of your family reading or completing an activity related to reading and tag Raising A Reader MA using #readtome30!!!

For every day that you share photos, your family will be entered into a raffle for your chance to win a basket full of books! Post your photos on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram to be entered in the raffle (one chance for each social media platform you post on)! That is a maximum of 90 chances (3 per day for 30 days) to win!

  1. Post a picture of your family reading or doing an activity related to reading.
  2. Tag Raising A Reader MA using #readtome30
  3. Get entered into our raffle with every post!

On this page are some books that we think are great for this theme! (These are merely suggestions. ANY book you read with your child is fine for this challenge!)

Go check out a book or a few at your local library or buy one on Amazon Smile! If you select Raising A Reader MA as your favorite charity, Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase price to us.

Activities:

  1. Related to The Little Red Riding Hood: Act out the story in a game of charades! Write the story onto several strips of paper, each piece containing an action sentence. Have someone act out the sentence without making a sound, while the others guess who they are from the story.
  2. Related to Humpty Dumpty: Teach a lesson in the kitchen by boiling eggs together, and enjoy making a healthy protein packed meal of egg salad or deviled eggs.
  3. Related to Where the Wild Things Are: Make masks like these using paper bags and any craft materials you have around!
  4. Related to The Princess Knight: Help build a fort castle! Think back to your childhood to get creative with sheets, blankets, belts, ropes, and furniture to make a big fort together and pretend that it is a castle!
