Time to Sleep, Sheep the Sheep by Mo Willems is a great picture book for the youngest readers. There is repetition as Cat the Cat goes to various animals wishing them goodnight. This is excellent for recall and prediction questions. The story itself is simple and a little silly. There are not many words on the page, but parents can always ask questions about who the various animals are, what they are doing, etc. At the end, when Cat the Cat reaches the owl, what do you think happens? It’s a great way to introduce the term “nocturnal” to young children.
