For those who have missed it, we featured one of our Emerging Leaders, Joshua Schaer, here on our blog two days ago. In his introduction video, he talked about one of his favorite children’s book, Goodnight Moon.
This book has been a family classic for years, so if you have not yet read it, go to your local public library to check it out! Want a copy of it for your home? Buy it here on Amazon Smile! (If you select Raising A Reader MA as your favorite charity, Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase price to us.)
After sharing (or re-sharing for the billionth time) this book with the young ones in your home, try the following activities to extend their learning beyond the book:
1. Try a craft. Do you have any paper plates at home? This activity is simple and would make a great bedroom decoration. Here are some other creative ideas.
2. Bake some cookies. Ask your child(ren) to help you out with the baking. They can shape the dough into the moon and stars. Alternatively, you could do this with play-doh.
3. Visit Chinatown. Did you know that the Chinese Moon Festival was this past Monday? Now that the holiday has passed, you can buy mooncakes from the Chinese supermarkets for a discount! Expose your child(ren) to a different culture and food!
4. Tour the Museum of Science. On Fridays (weather-permitting), the Museum of Science offers the public opportunities to stargaze for FREE! They also have the Charles Hayden Planetarium with many interesting shows about our universe.
5. Make your own book. This free printable provides you with many fun prompts or you can create a book from scratch! After stapling some blank pages together, ask your child(ren) to look around the house and draw objects that s/he would like to say “goodnight” to.
