Chelsea, Revere, East Boston, and Winthrop

History:

The city of Chelsea was Raising a Reader’s birthplace in Massachusetts in 2006.  Five years later, we have expanded to the surrounding towns of Revere, East Boston, and Winthrop, filling the homes of approximately 5,000 children with bright and colorful books.

Siury Pulgar joined the Raising A Reader MA team in the Spring of 2010, as Program Coordinator for Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop, and East Boston. Since then, Siury has brought her passion and commitment to our existing relationships and helped foster new ones through community outreach.

Who We Serve:

In Chelsea, over 60% of children do not know how to read by the third grade and many of these children continue to struggle throughout school.  Poor literacy is one of the main causes of school failure according to the experts, and a leading contributor as to why 50% of students in Chelsea do not complete high school on time. In Revere, 37% of children cannot read as of the third grade and 35% fail to finish high school within 4 years.

Raising a Reader MA serves children who otherwise would not be exposed to books as we help parents create a reading routine with their young children.  Every year, we send home approximately 5,500 books reaching almost 1,400 children and their families within these communities alone.
