Chelsea, Revere, East Boston, WinthropHistoryRaising A Reader MA’s first community launch was in Chelsea in May 2006. Since that time, we have expanded to the surrounding towns of Revere, East Boston, and Winthrop. Sarah Mountcastle joined the RAR MA team in September, 2008, as Program Coordinator for Chelsea, Revere, Winthrop, and East Boston. Since then, Sarah has nurtured our existing relationships and fostered new ones, so that Raising A Reader has nearly saturated the Chelsea community. Past and Upcoming Events:“Skating with the Bears” Family Literacy Event Throughout the month of February, Raising A Reader Massachusetts and the Revere Public Library partnered to put on a month long family reading program for children under the age of 5 called “Skating With the Bears.” Over 250 families in Revere participated by sharing stories every day for a month, and documenting their daily reading and favorite book titles. At the end of the program, the community came together to put on a final celebration to honor the children and their parents. All the children who participated received a certificate of completion and an invitation to learn how to skate, for free, at FMC Ice Sport’s Cronin Skating Rink. Special guests in attendance included the Boston Bruins, a skating polar bear, and Silly Willy the Clown. To top off the event, Revere Mayor Thomas Ambrosino read the children’s story Skating with the Bears, by Andrew Breakspeare. Revere High School Read-A-Thon Fundraiser In April 2009, over 300 students at Revere High School chose Raising A Reader MA to be the beneficiary of their second annual Read-A-Thon. With the help of English teacher Kelly Andreoni, the students solicited pledges and spent 8 consecutive hours reading silently! Together, they raised $5,400 for RAR MA programs in Revere!
